Car hire in Airlie Beach: at the airport and in town

For guests staying at Whitsunday Reflections: whether you need a car, where to hire one at Whitsunday Coast Airport and in Airlie Beach, and where to drive.

First question

Do you need a car?

Not always. From Whitsunday Reflections you can walk down to the Airlie Beach Lagoon, the main street and the restaurants in about ten minutes, and a taxi back up the hill is about $8 to $13 with 13cabs (13 22 27) or Uber. Most island and reef trips leave from Coral Sea Marina or the Port of Airlie, both in town.

Car hire tips

  • Book early for school holidays and the winter months, when cars at the airport can run out.
  • Check the minimum age. Most companies require drivers to be at least 21, with extra conditions for younger drivers.
  • Bring your licence. If it isn't in English, you'll usually need an International Driving Permit or an official translation too.
  • Watch for wildlife on country roads around dawn and dusk.
